Superior Graphite, a century-old pioneer in graphite innovation, sought to pivot from traditional graphite production to high-value, EV-grade anode materials — a market demanding rigorous performance standards, independent validation, and strategic offtake partnerships.

To bridge the gap between its existing capabilities and the requirements of battery manufacturers, the company needed to secure investor confidence, funding, and a clear path to commercialization in a highly competitive landscape.

"Superior Graphite embodies the kind of entrepreneurial, technology-driven partner we are privileged to work with — a showcase for how Accelerate Capital works to scale climate tech companies."

To position Superior Graphite for success, Accelerate Capital worked closely with the company to define a comprehensive technical roadmap, leveraging our deep technical expertise and strategic foresight. This involved benchmarking material properties against industry targets and establishing critical performance metrics, such as tap density and first-cycle efficiency. A phased R&D plan was developed to systematically achieve EV-grade specifications.

Recognizing the importance of credibility, AC facilitated engagements with leading institutions, including IFE in Norway, Fraunhofer in Germany, and Argonne National Lab in the U.S. These collaborations ensured independent validation of Superior Graphite's product performance, which was essential for building trust with potential off-takers.

  • Led a US$170M DOE grant application, securing pre-selection for full review and drafting the majority of the submission — aligning technical, financial, environmental and social narratives to demonstrate Superior's innovation, supply-chain resilience, and market viability
  • Spearheaded RFQ submissions including a 1,200 tpa off-take agreement with a Nordic battery cell manufacturer, and initiated dialogues with leading automakers and battery producers
  • Delivered a 91-page competitive analysis covering 15 graphite anode producers, identifying key differentiators and supply-chain risks and providing actionable insights for the company's market strategy
  • Provided the board with actionable insights on divestment, restructuring, and new ventures to maximize shareholder value

AC, in close collaboration with Stanhope Capital Group, advanced Superior's case for both public and private capital by mapping the investor landscape, identifying funding opportunities, and initiating contact with potential investors.

Finally, Stanhope Capital and AC advised on the sale of Superior Graphite's U.S. and selected international assets — including its Active Anode Materials technology portfolio — to ExxonMobil. This landmark transaction enables ExxonMobil to accelerate the development of high-performance synthetic graphite for EV batteries, strengthening domestic supply chains that are critical to the energy transition.

A New Chapter: ExxonMobil's Commitment to Scaling Synthetic Graphite

With the acquisition of Superior Graphite's U.S. and international assets, ExxonMobil is now poised to lead the next phase of synthetic graphite production for EV batteries and energy storage. ExxonMobil's global resources, technical expertise, and commitment to innovation will enable the rapid scaling of Superior Graphite's proven technology, ensuring that the legacy of innovation continues under new leadership.

As ExxonMobil integrates these assets, the focus will be on expanding production capacity, optimizing performance, and driving further advancements in synthetic graphite technology — underscoring the critical role of synthetic graphite in enabling high-performance, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions for the future.
